Textphones

Most Nokia phones are compatible with textphones (also known as TTYs and TDDs). Using a textphone allows you to type and read your conversation during a call, rather than using speech and hearing communication.

Most CDMA phones have a universal 2.5mm headset jack (UHJ) that allows you to connect your textphone directly to a Nokia phone without an adapter.

Cellular compatible textphones come with a cable for connecting directly to the phone. Some phone models require an additional HDA adapter.

Connecting the Devices

Connect your textphone, Nokia phone, Nokia adapter and textphone cable as shown below. The textphone device may be sensitive to the radio waves of the phone, so keep as far apart as possible.

Making a Call

Connect the phone adapter to your Nokia phone, if necessary.

Connect the textphone to the phone or adapter using the cable supplied with the textphone.

Turn on the TTY/TDD mode in your phone from the "Accessory" or "Enhancement" menu.

Selecting "TTY/TDD on" makes this the default setting for your phone — you no longer need to select this from the menu again, unless you turn off the TTY/TDD mode.

Dial the TTY/TDD number with which you want to communicate.

When the receiving party answers, begin typing your conversation on your textphone.

Receiving a Call

Make sure the textphone and your Nokia phone are connected.

When your Nokia phone rings or vibrates (select "Vibrate" under the "Profiles" setting), press the "Send" button to answer the call. Type your response on the textphone.

Ending a Call

Press the "End" button on your phone.

Tips for TTY Users

TTY/TDD is a network-dependent feature. If you are experiencing high error rates when typing, verify that you have the TTY/TDD mode turned on and you have sufficient network strength. If the problem persists, contact your service provider to ensure the TTY/TDD feature is supported.
